Job Description Summary

The Business Data Analyst reports to the Associate Director for Institutional Research (IR) and plays a significant role in making sure that data and information produced by the IPAE office is delivered accurately and efficiently internally and externally. Many duties involve sensitive and/or confidential issues; the successful candidate must demonstrate careful judgment, a high level of discretion and the ability to work independently. While the majority of the work will be done in Power BI, this position will require managing data from multiple sources, understand database design, and is skilled with SQL. The Business Data Analyst will work effectively with leaders across the University and at peer institutions and ideally would have familiarity with the academic programs and administrative offices of Clarkson University. This position will assist the Associate Director for IR with providing required institutional data to the state and federal government and accreditation agencies.

Position Responsibilities:

Business Data Analyst
• Coordinate the reporting of data to state and federal agencies.
• With direction from the Associate Director of IR, maintain the quality of data repositories/data dictionary by adding, modifying, and deleting data. Assist with the maintenance and reporting of datasets related to facility usage, faculty teaching loads, and employment/affirmative action.
• Assist with the collection and reporting of admissions, enrollment, retention, and graduation data, as well as data and reporting analysis for deans, directors, and key other stakeholders using the Data Digest. Determine and analyze commonly used queries and reports.
• Become knowledgeable in student, course, and enrollment data in order to support student progress and enrollment functions.
• Develop expertise with PeopleSoft data tools such as Query Manager.
• Use deep knowledge of business processes, technology, analytical and organizational skills, problem solving skills, and outreach with constituents to gather and validate data requirements.
• Design, build, and maintain dashboards and visualizations.
• Work with the Associate Director of IR and data warehouse architects to translate requirements into technical specifications.
• Develop PeopleSoft WorkCentre’s in order to provide users with self-service access to data, information, and analysis.
• Provides support for user community and adhere to data standards; assist with the development and ongoing maintenance of the University Data Dictionary.
• Assist with coaching and training of customers in the use of the business intelligence solutions to enhance decision-making capability; develops training materials, supporting documentation, and business process workflow design.
• Provide support for institutional decision-making and outcomes assessment through the collection and analysis of internal and external benchmarks, including institutional key performance indicators and peer comparison measures.
• Work with the Associate Director to develop metadata for user reporting.
• Perform exploratory data analysis as requested, preparing statistical datasets, reports, tables, graphs, narratives and questionnaires in print, electronic, and web-enabled formats.
• Serve on various membership councils, committees, and project teams as appropriate
• Develop and prepare reports and analytic studies to support planning and policy development.
• Respond to internal and external requests for institutional data, including the completion of surveys for federal and state agencies, college guides, professional associations, and ad hoc data requests.
• Support enforcement of version control and change management for all reporting processes.

Project/Work Planning
• Support the IPAE office with the planning and execution of one or more analytic, business process improvement, technology, or change management initiatives. Liaise with stakeholders across the University to ensure successful adoption and implementation of new initiatives;
• Participates in or supports work stream planning process;
• Develop project schedules and tracking of deliverables, milestones and tasks;
• Performing other data related duties as assigned.

Essential Skills:
• Experience using data to support planning & decision-making.
• Strong data analysis skills with the ability to analyze institutional reporting needs and assemble and interpret meaningful data.
• Advanced skills using Microsoft Office, including Excel and Access; experience with PeopleSoft is a plus.
• Experience with Oracle SQL, PeopleSoft, or other relational database software. Sound understanding of relational database structures, and dimensional data sets.
• Experience with Business Intelligence solutions such as Power BI, Tableau, open source visualization tools, or similar technical expertise is a plus.
• Excellent communication, writing, organizational and presentation skills required.
• Ability to work independently and in a team collaboratively.
• High level of energy and enthusiasm for working in an extremely demanding, and diverse environment.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Data Analytics, Business Management or specialized training/certification. Or equivalent experience working in a data-driven environment, proficient with database technologies and programming/analyst experience totaling 6 to 8 years.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 3-5 years’ of Business Analysis or related technical experience pulling metrics and producing insights to support decision-making functions and planning.
