Job Description Summary

The Associate Director of Media Relations serves as the alternate representative and liaison to the news media for the University; plans, creates and executes University messages in social media; and creates news stories and media briefs consistent with University marketing identity and objectives. This person also plays a key role on the University’s Emergency Response Team.

Position Responsibilities:
• Independently pursue and seek leads to create news releases/stories, information briefs and social media messages consistent with University marketing identity and objectives.
• Distribute news releases to the media, post on the University Web site and deliver through social media channels.
• Respond to news media inquiries, judging what the proper response should be to their queries.
• Communicate with news media and accompany news media personnel on campus, sharing duties with director, as needed.
• Serve as a member the University Emergency Response Team with primary responsibility for social media communications and alternate responsibility for crisis communication to the news media and internal communications (24/7).
• Approve, write/proof, develop and implement internal University communication, maintaining consistent standards and exercising judgment on internal communication priorities and standards.
• Consistent with the University brand and support of overall marketing efforts, collaborate with senior administrators of the University in crafting key messages about campus initiatives and information that encourage engagement.
• Advise and train members of the University community on how to promote their event or program.
• Liaise with personnel from admissions, student life, research centers, academic departments and student groups on campus to develop annual social media calendar and support its execution.
• Provide vision, strategic direction, and leadership for social media communications.
• Independently generate, edit and maintain content for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other social media channels.
• Advise and train members of the University community on proper use of social media, cultivating productive relationships that encourage University community participation in such activity.
• Manage University Social Media Policy, assuring that all departments and personnel adhere to policy
• Evaluate the success of all University social media communications with stakeholders.
• Monitor social media channels for possible responses or action by University (24/7).
• Mentor and supervise student worker team to ensure quality content and dissemination of news, social media messages and hometown news releases.
• Assist Service Excellence Team communication committee in dissemination of information to employees and in managing Service Excellence “intranet” site.
• Represent Marketing & External Communications on committees and in key initiatives, as assigned.
• Represent the University on external boards, committees and key initiatives, as assigned.
• Maintain confidential University information.
• Learn latest cutting-edge techniques in the field through professional reading, developing professional contacts, attending professional development classes, and attending training and/or as directed.

Essential Skills:
• Excellent writing, editing and proofreading skills
• Strong communication skills
• Ability to make independent judgements on proper use of University communication channels and news dissemination/responses.
• Ability to make independent judgements on selection of news for release to media in emergency situations
• Ability to incorporate marketing strategies and methodologies into social media
• Experience communicating professionally using social media like for Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, LinkedIn and other social media channels.
• Basic digital photography and photo editing skills using Photoshop.
• Experience using Microsoft Office and a web content management system.
• Flexibility and creativity, ability to handle multiple projects, self-motivation, and an ability to work with diverse constituencies.
• Ability to work in a team environment within the organizational setting.
• Skill at developing successful collaborative efforts with a range of constituencies.
• Experience using Photoshop, Adobe InDesign CC, or similar software (preferred).

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with course experience demonstrating writing and strategic thinking.
Two years of proven success as a communicator in university communications, journalism, business or industry.

Bachelor’s degree in relevant field with course experience demonstrating writing and strategic thinking and master’s degree in relevant field.
Four years of proven success as a communicator in university communications, journalism, business or industry.

Physical Demands
