Position Summary Information

Job Description Summary

Support teaching, learning, and research at Clarkson through information literacy instruction, research consultation, collaboration, and collection development.

I. Information Literacy Education
• Plan, promote, execute, and evaluate the Libraries’ instructional program.
• Work cooperatively with teaching faculty to incorporate information competencies into their courses. Collaborate to identify needs, content and most effective delivery methods for teaching sessions.
• Develop, coordinate, and implement library research and resource-based workshops for the University community. Collaborate across campus to expand learning opportunities and advance the instruction program.
• Represent and introduce the Libraries at first-year student orientations and seminars to increase awareness and utilization of library resources and services.
• Maintain current knowledge of instructional methods and new technologies to facilitate teaching, learning and research.
• Cultivate and retain a collection of professional readings, suggested activities, training materials, and tutorials for use in instruction and research support.

II. Reference and Research Support
• Provide reference support and research assistance to faculty, students, and the campus community by receiving and responding to information requests in person and remotely through phone/email/chat.
• Promote and provide scheduled and impromptu research consultations.
• Train and mentor reference desk staff on use of applicable programs and best practices for providing high level patron service; train and supervise 2-3 student reference desk employees each semester.
• Manage staffing and scheduling of reference desk services.
• Create and keep viable general and subject-specific research guides on the Libraries’ website, as well as a variety of information literacy tutorials.
• Assess reference services through review of patron interaction statistics.

III. Collection Development
• Develop, manage, and evaluate, the Libraries’ collections in collaboration with colleagues as a member of the Collection Development Team.
• Make decisions regarding the selection and retention of print and electronic materials that support the academic curricula.

IV. Marketing and Outreach
• Promote the Libraries’ resources, programs and services through a variety of communication channels and institutional publications. This includes, but is not limited to, digital signboards, the Libraries’ news blog, Facebook posts, and orientation materials.
• Identify partnerships across campus to co-offer events and activities and seek ways to integrate resources and instruction into academic programs.

V. Public Services
• Assist where needed in hiring, training and supervising student workers in Evening Supervisor and Circulation Desk roles.
• Collaborate with other public services staff on workflow functions of the front office (circulation desk and business services support, including scheduling, policies, and web presence).

VI. Other
• Propose and implement policy for reference, collection development, and information literacy instruction.
• Explore and encourage innovative and creative use of available technology in support of library programs and services.
• Actively participate in institutional service and regional library committees; engage in appropriate professional development and scholarly activities to inform the position and for improvement to instructional programs and reference services.
• Other duties and projects as assigned by the Director of Libraries.

Essential Skills:

• Expertise navigating and searching a wide array of information resources.
• Excellent verbal, written, interpersonal, and presentation skills with a high degree of computer literacy; ability to effectively communicate one-to-one, in small groups, and in public speaking contexts.
• Must be fluent in English.
• Aptitude for developing instruction sessions and teaching library users, both individually and in a classroom setting.
• Knowledge of ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (Framework).
• Ability to comfortably interact with a wide variety of individuals including faculty, students, and staff of the University, as well as outside agencies and vendors.
• Resourcefulness and strong organizational skills; self-motivation and the ability to utilize sound independent judgment.
• Demonstrated flexibility with evidence of successfully working in a team environment.
• Strong service orientation.
• Good time management skills and the ability to prioritize and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency in utilizing Microsoft Office Suite.
• Commitment to continued professional development.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience, and Skills

• American Library Association (ALA) accredited MLS/MLIS degree or equivalent.
• 1-3 years of experience in an academic library or equivalent professional experience.
• Solid understanding of basic principles of library operations, processes, and trends.
• Experience with emerging technologies useful to the design and delivery of library services and instruction.

Must be able to travel.
Must be able to work evenings and occasional weekends.

• Second master’s degree or PhD in related field.
• 3-5 years of experience in an academic or research library.
• Experience providing successful library instruction in a college or university setting to students having a wide range of skills and goals.
• Library projects management.
• Experience with integrated library systems.

Physical Demands

Must be able to work at a computer for extended periods of time.
Must be able to read text in all formats.
Must be able to maneuver about library shelving.
Must be able to lift or move 20lbs, push book carts weighing up to 60lbs, and rearrange library furnishings.
